La sua unica colpa è quella di essere figlia di Zhang Lin, ex fisico nucleare che dalle rivolte di piazza Tiananmen nel 1989 si batte per la democrazia in Cina. In nome di questo legame, quattro uomini la prelevano da scuola e la portano in prigione, dove per 24 ore viene lasciata senza cibo, né acqua, né lenzuola pulite. È il 27 febbraio 2013. Da allora, Anni diventa la più giovane prigioniera di coscienza della Cina, costretta a subire ostracismo sociale e controlli in nome della battaglia per i diritti umani condotta da suo padre. Insieme, le due sorelle hanno scritto una lettera aperta indirizzata al presidente Usa Barack Obama e al presidente cinese Xi Jinping, per chiedere la liberazione di Zhang Lin. Pubblicata ieri, la missiva chiede la liberazione dell’attivista, che da oltre 10 mesi è in prigione - dopo l’ennesimo arresto - in attesa di un processo.

Dal 1989 a oggi, Zhang Lin è stato arrestato cinque volte, per un totale di oltre 13 anni passati in prigionia. Durante la detenzione le autorità lo hanno spesso torturato in modo terribile, al punto che oggi è costretto su una sedia a rotelle e soffre di dolori cronici. Nonostante questo, spiega Reggie Littlejohn ad AsiaNews, “egli ha continuato a denunciare le violazioni ai diritti umani commesse dal Partito, pur sapendo quale fosse il prezzo da pagare. Egli ha rinunciato a tutto per rivendicare i diritti umani in Cina: alla sua liberà, alla sua famiglia, alla sua salute, alla sua carriera”.

Da 10 mesi Zhang Lin è di nuovo in prigione per aver “disturbato l’ordine pubblico”. Il suo reato è stato organizzare, nel marzo 2013, una manifestazione e uno sciopero della fame per chiedere che sua figlia Anni potesse tornare a scuola, dopo l’ostracismo subito per via dell’arresto. “È stato in quei giorni - ricorda Littlejohn - che ho conosciuto Anni, durante un’intervista radio a cui partecipavamo entrambe”. Nel luglio l’uomo viene arrestato mentre tenta di fuggire a Pechino con la figlia: poco prima però, in accordo con l’ex moglie (e madre di Anni) firma i certificati necessari per affidare la tutela legale della figlia alla fondatrice di Women’s Rights Without Frontiers.

“Il processo per portare Anni fuori dalla Cina - racconta Littlejohn - è stato lungo e difficoltoso. Oltre a Zhang Lin, altre persone sono finite in prigione per aiutarla a scappare, e sono ancora in galera. È così che il Partito comunista agisce: detiene gli attivisti, poi la famiglia, poi chi li ha aiutati. Credo che abbiano lasciato andare Anni solo per la pressione internazionale che si stava creando intorno al caso. Imprigionare una bambina di 10 anni è stato così odioso che sapevano non ci saremmo fermati”.

Siamo Ruli Zhang e Anni Zhang, le figlie dell’attivista cinese pro-democrazia Zhang Lin. In questo momento nostro padre è ancora imprigionato nel Centro detentivo n.1 della città di Bengbu, nella provincia cinese di Anhui. Egli è stato accusato di “disturbare l’ordine pubblico”, ma nostro padre non ha fatto nulla di sbagliato! Sono più di 10 mesi da quando è stato arrestato la sera del 18 luglio 2013, e il verdetto è stato rinviato due volte: l’ultima risale al 20 maggio scorso, dopo quella del 20 novembre 2013. Ora chiediamo di nuovo al governo cinese: per favore, liberate senza condizioni nostro padre il prima possibile!

Nel febbraio 2013 nostro padre ha portato Anni dalla nostra città natale, Bengbu, in una scuola di Hefei. Ma per il solo fatto di essere un attivista pro-democrazia, Anni - ad appena 10 anni - è stata sequestrata dalla polizia di Hefei e detenuta da sola per oltre quattro ore. Ha passato la notte in prigione e non ha potuto fare ritorno alla scuola di Hefei. Per questo motivo la piccola Anni è stata privata della sua istruzione, e ha deciso di restare a casa e non incontrare altre persone. Quale padre non cercherebbe giustizia per la propria figlia, se una bambina innocente di 10 anni fosse coinvolta e perseguitata in questo modo? Senza contare che nostro padre è un uomo coraggioso!

Quest’anno cade il 25mo anniversario del movimento democratico del 1989 in Cina. Negli ultimi 25 anni la democrazia cinese ha fatto qualche progresso o miglioramento? Possiamo solo dire no, per niente, e anzi sta peggiorando! In questi 25 anni, il Partito comunista cinese ha fatto tutto il possibile per bloccare l’informazione, facendo sì che noi - la nuova generazione degli attivisti pro-democrazia del 1989 - siamo del tutto inconsapevoli delle atrocità commesse allora. [Il Partito] ha anche perseguitato attivisti virtuosi come nostro padre, buttandoli per anni in prigioni da cui non potevano vedere la luce del sol. Venticinque anni fa, il Partito ha mentito al popolo cinese, affermando che il movimento per la democrazia del 1989 è stato solo “una sommossa e una rivolta pianificate, organizzate ed eseguita da un piccolo gruppo di persone, che sono dominate dai poteri occidentali”. Questo ha reso impossibile per le madri di Tiananmen accettare il fatto che studenti e figli innocenti siano stati massacrati sulle strade, e poi accusati dallo Stato di essere criminali, prima di essere sepolti in maniera appropriata. Dopo 25 anni, i comunisti cinesi ancora non vogliono rimangiarsi quelle parole, né chiedere scusa, ma piuttosto continuano a fare tutto il possibile per perseguitare la gente, persino allungando i loro artigli di diavolo su una bambina di 10 anni!

Prima che si consumasse il massacro del 4 giugno 1989, nostro padre Zhang Lin - insieme ad altri leader studenteschi della locale Business School - ha guidato il movimento democratico della città di Bengbu; inoltre, con l’assistenza di dirigenti e colleghi, ha organizzato il sostegno della popolazione locale al movimento pro-democrazia di Pechino, tenendo comizi nelle fabbriche della zona. Il campo di lavoro ha provocato molte sofferenze a nostro padre. Spesso è stato imprigionato con detenuti malati o criminali violenti, e le guardie carcerarie spesso incitavano queste persone a picchiarlo, fermandoli solo quando la situazione stava degenerando. Dopo i pestaggi nostro padre non ha mai ricevuto cure adeguate, causandogli oggi molti dolori cronici impossibili da trattare. Ora per la quinta volta nostro padre si trova in prigione. Egli non può più sopportare le torture, fisiche e psicologiche. E a posteriori [continuiamo a chiederci], cosa ha fatto di male?

Ora siamo venute negli Stati Uniti. Stiamo ricevendo un’istruzione democratica e possiamo godere di una vita libera. Come figlie di un attivista pro-democrazia del 1989, porteremo avanti la fede e l’impegno di nostro padre, cercando di diventare pilastri del movimento democratico cinese e di dare un contributo alla nostra madre patria. Infine, vogliamo ancora appellarci ai leader mondiali: per favore, continuate a prestare attenzione al movimento democratico cinese del 1989, controllate per essere sicuri che il governo della Cina restauri la verità di quanto accaduto 25 anni fa. Spingete il governo cinese a fermare la persecuzione di persone coraggiose come nostro padre, e restituiteci una Cina democratica!

Veteran activist Zhang Lin is currently serving his fifth detention for his renowned pro-democracy advocacy. When the Tiananmen Square massacre occurred, Zhang Lin bravely refused to leave his post as a leader of the pro-democracy protests in Bengbu City, Anhui Province. Immediately after June 4, he was jailed for a year and then spent an additional two years in a Chinese forced labor camp. During this time, and in subsequent detentions, he was beaten and tortured. His health has been broken to the point that when he was most recently released, his daughter Anni, who was eight years old at the time, had to care for him because he could not move.

When the Chinese Communist Party could not silence the indomitable Zhang Lin with multiple incarcerations and tortures, they went after his young daughter, Anni. When she was just ten years old, unidentified men whisked her away from her elementary school and detained her overnight. Once freed from detention, she was not allowed to return to school. When her father exposed this abuse of his daughter, the two of them were placed under house arrest. Ultimately, Zhang Lin was detained again, on July 18, 2013. His sentencing has been delayed twice and he remains in jail today. Because there was no one to take care of Anni, last September Women’s Rights Without Frontiers was able to obtain safe passage to the United States for Anni and her older sister Ruli. We did this with the help of Congressman Chris Smith, Jing Zhang of Women’s Rights in China, and many other brave people in the United States and China. Four people remain in detention in China today because they helped Anni.

OPEN LETTER – RELEASE OUR FATHER, TIANANMEN HERO ZHANG LIN!

Dear President Obama, President Xi Jinping and other World Leaders,

Greetings!

We are Zhang Ruli and Zhang Anni, the daughters of Chinese pro-democracy activist Zhang Lin. At this moment our father is still jailed in the No. 1 Detention Center of Bengbu City of China’s Anhui Province. He was accused of “disturbing public order,” but our father did nothing wrong! It has been more than 10 months since he was arrested on the evening of July 18^th, 2013, and the verdict was delayed twice: the latest was from May 20^th of this year to November 20^th. We now ask the Chinese government again: please unconditionally release our father as soon as possible!

Last February, our father brought Anni from our hometown, Bengbu City, to a school in Hefei City. But simply because my father was a pro-democracy activist, 10-year-old Anni was abducted by the state police of Hefei City and was detained alone for more than 4 hours. She spent the night in detention and was not allowed to go back to school in Hefei. Little Anni was thus deprived of her education, and she kept herself at home and refused to meet people. If his 10-year-old, innocent daughter were involved and persecuted like this, what father would NOT seek justice for her? Not to mention that our father is an intrepid man!

This year marks the 25^th anniversary of the 1989 democracy movement in China. In the past 25 years, has China’s democracy made any progress or improvement? I can only say, not at all — and in fact it is getting worse! In these 25 years, the Chinese Communist Party is doing everything it can to block information, causing us, the next generation of the 1989 pro-democracy activists, to be completely unaware of what atrocity they did back then. They also persecute the righteous activists like our father, causing them to be trapped in jail for years where they cannot see the light of the day. Twenty-five years ago, they lied to the Chinese people, claiming that the 1989 democracy movement in China is just “a riot and an insurgency planned, organized and performed by a small group of people, who are dominated by western powers.” This made it impossible for the Tiananmen Mothers to accept the fact that innocent students and children were slaughtered on the street, and were further accused by the state of crimes of insurgency before they were buried properly. After twenty-five years, the Chinese Communists still don’t want to repent and apologize, but rather are doing their utmost to persecute people, even reaching their evil claws to a ten-year-old child!

Before the June 4^th massacre happened in 1989, our father Zhang Lin, together with student leaders of the local Business School, led the democracy movement of Bengbu City; moreover, with the assistance of managers and colleagues, he organized local people to support Beijing’s pro-democracy movement, giving speeches to local factories, businesses, causing the democracy movement of Bengbu City to come to a peak, and affecting the nearby cities. When the massacre happened on June 4^th 1989, our father was only 26 years old and refused to leave his position for promoting democracy. He firmly believed that as long as the democracy movement would persist, the Chinese democracy would improve. However, the reality was opposite to his ideal. He was immediately arrested after the June 4^th massacre, and was jailed for more than one year, and then another two years of “Lao Jiao” (Labor Camp). In jail, he was treated inhumanely, and he went on a hunger strike to protest. But what he got from the hunger strike was more beating and electric chair shocking. His hunger strike ended with forced feeding. Now the Chinese communist party has afflicted him for these 25 years. He was jailed four times during this period, and was sentenced to a total of 13 years in jail, not to mention other numerous subpoenas, interrogations and detentions that he experienced, and also constant eavesdropping and monitoring by the Chinese government. The Labor Camp caused our father a lot of suffering. He was often jailed together with sick inmates or violent criminals, and the jail guards often encouraged other inmates to give him beatings, only stopping them when it got serious. And our father was not properly treated after these beatings or ill treatments, causing him to bear a lot of impossible-to-cure illnesses to this day. Now, it is the fifth time our father has gone to jail. He cannot bear the torture anymore, both physically and psychologically — and in retrospect, what wrong did he do?

Now we have come to the United States. We are receiving a democratic education and are able to enjoy a free life. As offspring of a 1989 democracy activist, we will continue our father’s faith and pursuit, trying to develop ourselves into mainstays of the Chinese democracy movement, and contribute to our home country. Lastly, we would like to again appeal to world leaders: please continue to pay attention to the Chinese 1989 democracy movement that happened 25 years ago, check to make sure that the Chinese government will recover the truth of what happened back then. Urge the Chinese government to stop persecuting courageous people like our father, and give us back a democratic China!
